Depression is the stand-out winner when it comes to picking the worse of all mental disorders. Why? Well partly because of the sheer number of people affected (experts estimate between 30-95%, dependent upon age group) and partly because depression can be fatal. And very much because it's not just the sufferer who suffers. Depression has a deep and brutal impact on the whole family.
I'm sure you can see why depression would be considered so dangerous, but there's something that makes it even more rotten, and that's the very rapid increase in rates of depression world wide.
This increase is well known and well documented, with the WHO (World Health Organisation) reporting that on current increases, by the year 2020 depression will overtake the cardio-vascular diseases (like heart disease for example) as the most expensive health item on the planet.
You can understand that governments would want to turn that around!
But while governments like like to find an answer, it seems they have difficulty looking past the huge marketing budgets of the pharmaceutical companies, who've done their darnedest to sell us on a class of drug known as the SSRI's (serotonin selective re-uptake inhibitors). It's amazing what a marketing budget can do.
The SSRI's have been around long enough now for us to have seen some very serious side effects, not just while people are taking them, but especially when they try to stop them! Maybe we could tolerate that if they worked, but the evidence is that they're no more effective than sugar pills. This is why you shouldn't be surprised if your doctor is wary about handing out that prescription!
SO THE DRUG DOESN'T WORK, NOW WHAT?
That's a great question! I'm not saying all drugs are useless for depression, because in rare cases there are certain drugs that sure can be helpful, but it's not the SSRI's! The good news is that a newly-developed Australian treatment for depression, backed by a boatload of excellent research around the world, has proven to provide very fast, and very easy relief for this awful disorder.
It's very important to share exactly what this approach is - too many people depend on it. Firstly it's important to take an inventory of at least 17 lifestyle mistakes that are known to have the potential to actually create depression. Secondly it's important to use a set of therapy techniques that actively eliminate depressed thinking styles in the brain. This is absolutely NOT cognitive behaviour therapy, which is certainly no better than the SSRI's! These new techniques are known as BMSA (brief, multi-sensory activation) and represent a true breakthrough in neurophysiology.
WHERE ARE THE DETAILS FOR THIS NEW APPROACH?
Because this is an article and not a book, there's not room to detail everything right here. Instead I'd like to direct you to some excellent free resources that help you deal very comprehensively with the crucial lifestyle factors, and also give you an opportunity to try out BMSA for yourself and see how effective it is at quickly giving you relief from troubling thoughts and feelings.
In particular look out for two books: "17 Solutions" and "Stop Wishing and Start GETTING!" The first of these deals with lifestyle. The second is actually a great read and deals with the shortcomings of "The Secret", but ends up stepping you through an actual BMSA process so you try it on for yourself.
These books are just a couple of the range of freebies accessed by members of TopLifeSolutions.com and you'll have to join to get them. But that's not a problem because membership is free too. The range of self-help tools is excellent, and they're all designed to help people get fast relief from health problems, and move on to a lot more happiness and satisfaction with life in general.
Licensed health professionals can access more technical information and training in depression treatment on www.bmsa-int.com, a peer-support group for clinicians.
