On the surface it is an easy way to get started making income on the internet. Affiliate marketing offers promise with very little risk. And it can make you a lot of money.

Because it is so easy to join and the costs are so low, many people are building an online business of their own. The allure of a steady, regular income from home is attractive to almost everyone.

The truth is that like any business, making a significant income takes work. And not just any work. There are some things that an affiliate marketer must do well, and some things that must be avoided if you are to get off to a good and profitable start.

Mistake number 1: Choosing the wrong affiliate program

If you have been trying online marketing for any length of time, you are probably now on a number of email lists. And you get bombarded with "urgent news" about the latest hot product that everyone on the planet is going to need. And you are led to believe that if you miss this, you will be missing out on your only chance to really make it in affiliate marketing.

What happens is that beginners end up choosing a product that they really cannot promote because it is not something they feel very strongly about. They either don't understand the product, like a lot of the marketing affiliate products or the product is in a niche that they are not that interested in.

Clearly the solution here is to try to choose product that you have some interest in. That may be a marketing product, but it could also be an affiliate program totally unrelated to online marketing. Think about your interests and seek out those programs that you would buy for your own use.

Mistake number 2: Joining too many affiliate programs.

Since affiliate programs are very easy to join, you might be tempted to join multiple affiliate programs to try and maximize your earnings. Besides, you may think that there is nothing wrong and nothing to lose by being part of many affiliate programs.

True, that is a great way to have multiple sources of income. However, joining multiple programs and attempting to promote them all at the same time will prevent you from concentrating on each one of them.

Mistake number 3: Not buying the product or using the service.

It is really a good idea, when possible, to use the product you are marketing. This way you can know what the product can and cannot do. And when you can speak honestly about a product and mention its shortcomings, then you earn the trust of your readers. You are not just another marketer pushing a product without considering whether it is good or not.

It is therefore difficult for you to do this when you yourself have not tried these things out. Thus, you will fail to promote and recommend them convincingly. You will also fail to create a desire in your customers to try it for themselves.

Become an above average affiliate marketer by avoiding these mistakes. Once you are making a regular monthly income from one or two affiliate products, then think about spreading out into other products. It is at this point that you will be comfortable with the processes that are required to successfully market any product, and you will be experienced enough to be able to add another product without getting confused and ineffective.
