Is your restaurant appealing to those with children? You may be surprised to discover that children don't just enjoy eating at fast food places. They do want to go where they can have some fun and enjoy great food. They want to be comfortable when they eat out. They can also pick up on when mom and dad are comfortable too and this will help to relieve any anxiety they may have.
The majority of restaurants offer both booths and tables. You don't have to but it is strongly encouraged. Many people will have a preference as to which one they sit in. You will find individuals with small children often request a booth. Always make sure you ask what they want instead of just assigning them one or the other. It is easier to prevent children from falling and to keep them seated.
Make sure you have an adequate supply of high chairs too. It can be difficult for an adult to eat when they have to hold a small child and feed them too. All high chairs should have safety straps that can be adjusted to secure the children that are placed in them. Either offer those that have their own tops or make sure they are the right height to slide under the table where everyone else is eating.
It can be a while before the food is ready in certain restaurants. You may wish to offer something small for the children. This can be in the form of something like crackers. You should check with the parents first though as they may not want their children to have anything before their meal arrives. If you already offer something such as chips and salsa or breadsticks though that is adequate.
Many children can be easily entertained by games on the table. There are many different ones you can offer them. Games with the pegs where you have to jump each one and try to get down to as few as possible are great. You can offer a set of links too that they can connect and build things with.
Nothing is simpler that providing them with a page to color or to do activities on though. It can be something related to your business or to the season. Try to get new ones in on a regular basis too. This way children that come in frequently don't end up bored as they have already done that one over and over again.
Be supportive when parents come in with their own agenda for keeping their kids happy. It can be a game or a few toys that they allow their child to enjoy before the meal. Should some be left behind you can keep them in a safe location until someone calls or comes in to pick them up.
Keeping children happy in a restaurant isn't that difficult. It does help if you are geared towards doing what you can to make it happen though. Do your best to offer an atmosphere that is family oriented. As a parent, it can be very uncomfortable to eat in a place where you feel your children really aren't welcome.
