Does the size of a coffee shop really matter? It really doesn't even though there are plenty of people in the industry that would argue with that statement. While a large coffee shop can hold more people, it also takes more employees to operate. As a result the overhead expenses will increase.
Just because you have a large coffee shop doesn't mean people will come in and fill it up either. In fact, going this route can result in your business not doing very well from the start. You have to be able to attract a large customer base to keep the doors open on a big coffee shop location.
Customers have other criteria that they are concerned with than the size of the location. People even go to drive up ones if they offer the right elements. They include fast service that is friendly, delicious coffee products, good prices, and a nice atmosphere. All of these things can be found at a small independent coffee shop or a large chain business.
You will find many consumers enjoy the atmosphere of a small coffee shop. They are known by name and have their regular drink they order. They may even have their regular place to sit and enjoy it. There is a myth that a small coffee shop can't offer the same select of items though. This really isn't true as you will find most coffee shops have a large menu regardless of how big or small they are.
Those large coffee shops are more than likely well know by name though. This is due to the popularity of chain coffee shops opening up all the time. The more in demand they are the more corners you will find them on. Each one is independently owned and operated though. They still face the challenge of pleasing the customer just like a smaller coffee shop does.
People don't want to feel crowded, so that can be an issue to address with a small coffee shop. If people want to sit down and enjoy their drinks, it may not be possible due to the small number of tables available. You may be able to find a way to reorganize them though to give more room. Consider more tables for one or two people instead of larger ones as well.
When it is all said and done, the size of a coffee shop really doesn't matter. As long as customers feel comfortable there and they get quality drinks it will work. They will also expect exceptional customer service. If all of these elements can be covered, you have nothing to worry about.
For small coffee shops, take pride in what you have to offer. Should you decide to expand it needs to be based on your customer base. Don't do it just to have the same amount of space as some other coffee shop. You don't want to have more expenses than you can cover based on your sales.
