Every day, people fall for the promise of easy riches through offering a giant selection of products to others. The concept is practically hypnotic: simply sell thousands of different products to people and you almost can't fail. Unfortunately, the concept is flawed. The promise is faulty. And the people who follow that misguided advice are nearly doomed to frustration and business failure. Luckily, there is a path that offers a systematic process for success. In order to learn that process, it's critical that you first understand why offering thousands of products is a recipe for failure.
Why Shotgun Marketing Equals Problems
The reason shotgun marketing has to be such a stab in the dark is because no one person can have enough time to effectively analyze markets and intimately learn the many facets of their products and buyers. Although you may have all good intentions, placing them, juggling them when they don't sell and desperately trying to keep track of how each one goes daily, you're only setting yourself up for failure.
How Sniper Marketing is Successful
Everyone has seen at least one movie with a sniper character, so you know how he strategically chooses his location, sets up with precision and then in perfect timing, hits his target. This sniper marketing metaphor is describing running your internet business with care, accuracy and concentration: allowing yourself time to learn your customer's needs and intimately understand what it is they will pay for. When you can answer these questions, you will be ready to run an internet business that will provide you with a good income.
This style of marketing is impossible to do with thousands of products. Each product needs to be promoted individually. You need to approach and speak to each market individually. That is the most effective way to successfully run a business. When you focus intensely on just a few products and markets, you can gain more knowledge and experience. These things allow you to compete more aggressively in those markets.
To be Effective, Know Your Figures
In any business, knowing your numbers is the key to success. For example, if you are buying pay-per-click advertising to drive traffic to your website, you must know your ad spend, your profit, your profit margins and ongoing return on investment (ROI) for each campaign, adgroup and product. If you don't know these numbers, your ability to compete with other advertisers will be impaired. While it's impractical to do this for thousands of products, knowing your numbers is relatively easy when you focus on a few products and markets.
Ultimately, running a successful business is about knowing your markets, understanding their needs and desires and knowing your numbers enough to remain competitive. You cannot do any of these things when you offer thousands of products simultaneously. Instead, focus on a few. Get to know your markets and product intimately. You will likely find your path to success much easier and quicker than you imagined.
