My last article was about the myth of retirement, and how it robs most people of the happiness they hope for. It really struck a nerve with many of my readers that have a business on the Internet. If you've been patiently waiting for my solution... your wait is over. And if your current situation seems hopeless, you're in luck. You see, right now most people have a false sense of certainty about what they believe will be their likely future. Truth be told, most entrepreneurs' envisioned future isn't much different from an infant's security blanket - they both don't serve any real purpose other than providing a false sense of security.
You have to look at it this way. Did you know you would be where you are now many years ago? You can't be so sure about your future unless you look at all of the external factors. The way a business on the Internet works and how it changes all the time.
Proof that things change with a business on the Internet can be found everywhere. Besides the Internet itself changing almost monthly, other trends come and go with no apparent reason.
Your business on the Internet cannot stand up against the winds of change. Books like In Search of Excellence and Good To Great showcased businesses that were supposed to be built to last. The truth is, after many years, that most of those businesses were as sensitive to a changing world as any are today.
That's why it's no longer safe to assume that your tomorrow will be like today or yesterday, no matter how excellent you've been or how long you've been around. Moreover, the further you go out into the future the more your vision of a business on the Internet may resemble a fairy tale.
When GP first told me about her grueling schedule I asked her when she made time for fun. Initially she tried to feed me some line about making time here and there. My experience coaching so many people with successful businesses on the Internet taught me not to challenge closely held beliefs head on. If you do all you meet up with is a lot of resistance.
GP, like many of my clients that have a business on the Internet, had already convinced herself that she actually did have fun. If I challenged her belief she would have gotten defensive and more committed to the belief. Instead, I asked for the details (which by the way is always the best way to covertly challenge any belief). She thought for a minute and told me she "used" to have fun by going rollerblading, playing with her dogs and going to the beach. GP then admitted to me (and more importantly to herself) she really didn't make time for fun. It's sad yet I see it all the time. Life was passing her by so fast and she just kept her head down clinging to the certainty of work over the uncertainty of her achieving happiness. And while this won't be popular, I'll write it anyway because the more I live the more I am convinced of its truth. Especially with people I know with a business on the Internet. Most People Consistently Choose Unhappiness Over Uncertainty.
If you have a business on the Internet or not, are you making important decisions based on uncertainty instead of unhappiness? It's not uncommon to have a dream but not be willing to take the risk to make it a reality. That's why so many people live a life of quiet desperation.
To help GP get back in touch with the important things in life, like enjoying yourself, we talked about making a running list of things we really liked to do for fun. If you do the same exercise you may wake up your mind and realize life is too short to work yourself to death for something you're not happy to have. If you have a business on the Internet now or you'd just like to have one someday, you must make time for fun. Make your list of things you enjoy and find the time in your schedule to enjoy them. Don't make the big mistake of waiting for retirement to start enjoying life.
