Keep in mind these next few tips when you're designing a web site.
Upper Left Handside Corner
Always place your logo on the upper left hand corner because people are conditioned to read for left to right, top to bottom. Naturally, this is where people would look first.
Just as computer applications put the most valuable command, the File command, on the upper left hand corner, you should also put the most valuable thing, your logo, there as well.
Big Links
Another web design tip is to make your links bigger. This means making your links consist of more than one word and making your cascading menu options farther apart from each other.
Above The Fold
Regarding newspapers, above the fold refers to the stories that are above the crease the newspapers make so they will fit in newspaper vending machines. The story above the fold is what gets a person's attention while walking down the street.
To get more people to see your important information and content, place these data above the web design fold; this means put the content where users won't have to scroll down to see it.
Layout vs Interface
Because the homepage is the most important page, you should have several options to choose from regarding layout and graphics. Make several graphic designs and put them in a powerpoint slide. This will make it easier for your client to browse through and choose from.
Worry about the interface after having chosen a graphics layout/theme.
